Smith & Wesson CSX E-Series: Big Blue’s Updated Hammer Pistol
Posted by Cory Ross on Feb 18th 2025

I was a bit confused when Smith & Wesson released the CSX pistol at the end of 2022. Not too long ago, small-frame, hammer-fired, 9mm pistols were all the rage in the concealed-carry world. Models like the Sig Sauer 938 and 238, the Kimber Micro 9 and 380, and the reintroduced Colt Mustang come to mind. They all had their moment, however, that moment was fleeting. The market evolved rapidly. Now, slim-line polymer-framed striker-fired pistols are in vogue, including the very popular M&P Shield series from Smith (you know, the pistol that started us down this path).
That said, it wasn’t a bad pistol at all. In fact, it grew on me. It felt good, solid, really. I thought it was smooth, but it fell short in modern features like texture, optics cut, and magazine capacity. I’m guessing they were using a new form of mind-reading AI to hear my thoughts because the new CSX E-Series that Smith released remedies those shortfalls—and they kind of built something cool (like actually cool. James Bond might carry one).
The Upgrades
According to Smith & Wesson, the CSX E-series is the next step forward in the CSX line. It features an upgraded E-Series trigger with a clean break and reset, extensive grip texture coverage, and a modular grip adapter that converts from micro-compact to compact frame sizes (this is neat). This optic-ready pistol is chambered in 9mm, offering options for 12, 15, or 17-round capacities (magazines and adapters included). This is a bit of a big deal. What company provides more than two magazines as a standard package? (I’m not including special deals retailers can get or rebates like Springfield does.) Compliant models provide a 10-round capacity with a compact flush-fit magazine and a 10-round extended magazine (longer grip adapter included, but sadly, no extra fun dispensers).
- Modular Grip Adapter—The modular grip adapter allows you to customize the size of your CSX for maximum concealment or enhanced shooting handling.
- E-Series® Trigger—The newly enhanced E-series trigger provides a light, clean break and an improved reset. The straighter pull to the rear aids accuracy while firing.
- Optics-ready - Modified RMS-C/507K optic footprint with Smith’s ClearSight™ cut, designed to divert gases from your optic lens while firing strategically.
- 3.1” stainless steel barrel with Armornite finish.
- White dot sights. (This is one thing that could be better.)
- And, of course, it’s all backed by Smith & Wesson’s Lifetime Warranty.
Final Thoughts
I like the direction Big Blue is taking with this one. It’s a combination of classic construction and modern features. I dig it. From my experience, this pistol style is perfect for new or inexperienced shooters and those more skilled in the craft. I argue this is true because of the materials used in its construction. It has more mass compared to polymer frame guns, which aids in recoil management and provides a more linear impulse. Moreover, the price isn’t bad for the new E-series. The MSRP is $699.99, but the street price will be $599.00. This makes it competitive with the other carry options on the market.
